The company was founded in the 1930s by Massimo Tonelli, who immediately started marketing livestock, then opened a small shop in the heart of Morbegno and later developed the art of butchering with a processing workshop, where he also started a cold cuts department. His son Silvio later joined the company and, under his father's watchful eye, grew it into one of the best known in the industry and further expanded it. Alico srl was founded in 1987, a new brand name to replace Tonelli Massimo; the choice of a new name stemmed from the entry into the company of the third generation of the Tonelli family, their daughter Paola.
